First Album

As a member of the band Suicidal Tendencies, Robert released his first studio album titled Lights…Camera…Revolution! in 1990. The album was declared ‘gold’ by The  Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).

With the band Metallica, he released his first album titled St. Anger in June 2003.

  1. He was first introduced to music by his mother who was a huge fan of Motown, and specifically musicians like Marvin Gaye, James Brown, and Sly and the Family Stone.
  2. He started playing in backyard party bands while he was in school mainly the music by artists such as Black Sabbath, Ozzy, Rush, and Led Zeppelin.
  3. His love for jazz led him to attend jazz school at the age of 19.
  4. He intended to become a studio musician while also maintaining an interest in rock and metal.
  5. In the late 1980s, he joined the California crossover thrash band Suicidal Tendencies, replacing their former bassist Bob Heathcote.
  6. While still a member of Suicidal Tendencies, he also became a member of funk metal supergroup led by Suicidal Tendencies frontman Mike Muir called the Infectious Grooves.
  7. He remained associated with the band Suicidal Tendencies until the mid-1990s.
  8. In the late 1990s, he joined ‘s band and remained a member for a long time.
  9. He also helped co-write several songs on the album Down to Earth.
  10. Robert was caught up in controversies when he re-recorded Bob Daisley’s bass tracks for reissued versions of Ozzy Osbourne’s first two solo albums Blizzard of Ozz and Diary of a Madman for which Bob Daisley claimed that he was not paid proper royalties.
  11. He also formed an experimental supergroup called the Mass Mental, with the Dub War singer Benji Webbe.
  12. He had already been friends with his Metallica bandmates even before joining the band as Suicidal Tendencies supported Metallica during the Nowhere Else to Roam tour in 1993, and the Shit Hits the Sheds tour in 1994.
  13. In 2002, he was associated with the heavy metal band Black Label Society and also worked on their 3rd studio album titled 1919 Eternal.
  14. He officially joined the band Metallica on February 24, 2003, and was paid 1 million dollars as an advance by the band. He was also inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame along with the fellow members of the band.
  15. In 2012, he began the production of a documentary about his favorite childhood jazz bassist Jaco Pastorius entitled Jaco, which released in November 2014.
