This brought differences between Gates and Griffin, who were the main contributors to the band. The band disbanded in 1973.

Gates recorded and released his solo album in 1973 called “First.” The album peaked at No. 47 in the Billboard Hot 100 and No three on the Adult Contemporary chart. The album had several singles which peaked on various charts. The album peaked at No. 102 on the Billboard 200.

After the band reunited in 1976, they released an album, “Lost Without Your Love, ” written and sung by Gates.
